Some Mbombela History
Our town was not always known as Mbombela. A court battle in May 2014 resulted in a somewhat controversial name change, but a change that most citizens have now happily accepted. Mbombela used to be known as Nelspruit, a name that was chosen in honour of the Nel brothers. Back in 1895, the Nel brothers would bring their cattle to the warm Lowveld, allowing them to graze in what is now a city. The warmer temperatures created the perfect environment in which to spend the winters. After that, Mbombela played a part in the Anglo-Boer War, today known as the South African War, and served as the parliamentary seat of the government of the Boer Republic. The town also became the place where prospectors would stop off before searching for gold in the nearby towns of Pilgrims Rest and Barberton, where gold veins had been discovered. To this day Barberton has numerous mines, and Pilgrim’s Rest is rumoured to still have deposits in the rocks.
It is because of our town’s incredible history along with the visitors who are always welcomed, that our town’s culture is quite the unique melting pot. Along with Tsonga, Swazi, English and Dutch historical influences, modern Mbombela is also quite influenced by the Portuguese culture, brought over from Mozambique.
The town is growing at an alarming pace, quickly turning from town to city. But that hasn’t changed the fact that we have an incredible climate! Driving out of the town, and you are likely to come across groves of orange trees and all sorts of other delicious, sub-tropical fruits. Our climate also means that our summers can be harsh if you are not used to the humidity. Our Mbombela accommodation is ideal for summer stays, seeing that we have air conditioning as well as swimming pools to keep you cooled off!
