Things To Do In Mpumalanga For Free!

Our accommodation in Mbombela gives you the perfect point of departure to do all kinds of exploring in Mpumalanga. There is so much to do and see in our beautiful province that you can easily spend a few weeks here and still not do it all!

Since times are a little tough, more and more people are taking advantage of the free things to do in Mpumalanga. And to help you on your quest, here are some of those free things you can take full advantage of.

  • Drive the Panorama Route
It starts in the Northern Drakensberg and flows all the way down the escarpment and into the Lowveld. The descent will take you through some of the most picturesque landscapes before you reach Mbombela (if that will be your final destination) and it is a drive that will certainly clear your mind.
  • Spend the day in Kaapsehoop
One of the most popular and best-known villages in Mpumalanga has to be Kaapsehoop. Nestled in the mountains above Mbombela, Kaapsehoop could easily be a fantasy especially when the winter mists descend. Along with great places to go hiking and a few restaurants to tuck into a hot meal, Kaapsehoop is home to wild horses, waterfalls and the perfect place to have a picnic.
  • Visit the waterfalls
With so many waterfalls between Mbombela, Sabie and Graskop, you’ll have a tough time narrowing down your options. But if you only visit one waterfall, make sure that it is the Lisbon Falls. You’ll find this waterfall just outside of Graskop and stands at an impressive 92 meters, it is the tallest waterfall in the area.
  • Pilgrim’s Rest
This part of the world was once a scene of arriving prospectors looking for their fortune. Pilgrim’s Rest is one of those towns that grew as a result of the gold rush and is now a historical landmark in the area. A day spent here can include exploring the town and its surrounds, before stopping off at one of the restaurants for a snack. Many of the buildings in the town are originals which have been restored and you can get a pretty accurate idea about how the town looked almost a hundred years ago.
  • Visit Sabie’s St Peter’s Church
There are few churches in the area as old as this one. The St Peter’s Church in Sabie is over a hundred years old and was designed by Sir Herbert Baker, a prominent man known for his architecture.

Staying at Mbombela Lodge means you have a quiet, comfortable place to retreat to after a day spent exploring. Book your accommodation in Mbombela today!
