Places To Go: A Day in Kaapsehoop

Mbombela Lodge is so close to all kinds of incredible attractions as well as historical towns, such as Kaapsehoop. A stay at our Mbombela accommodation means you are in the perfect location to get out there and go exploring!

For the longest time, the Lowveld has been a top tourist destination. Tempting city slickers from Gauteng to enjoy a relaxing break in the beautiful Lowveld, Mbombela is right in the heart of it all. From Mbombela Lodge, you can easily get around to plenty of exciting locations, including the rustic village of Kaapsehoop.

Just a short drive from Mbombela, a leisurely drive of about 30 minutes, will take you up a peaceful scenic road and at the last turn, you will see Kaapsehoop.

A Town Left Behind

Unlike most towns from the gold mining era, Kaapsehoop did not fall apart and become a ghost town. Instead, the town became a small hub of artistic activity and is today a popular destination for anyone wanting to take a break from busy city living.

Kaapsehoop weather along with the surrounding vegetation and rock formations can leave you believing that you have been transported back in time, to a completely different time. Kaapsehoop is best known for its horses. The wild horses roaming the area are descendants from horses owned by gold prospectors. They are in no way tamed, in fact they are the opposite. The horses are wild and as with any wild animal, they can be quite dangerous if they feel threatened in anyway. When hiking around the rocks, you are almost certainly going to come across the horses. Appreciate them from a distance, but don’t feed them or try to touch them.

Because of its location, Kaapsehoop was once known as the Duiwel’s Kantoor, simply because of its foreboding presence, something it gave to both passing visitors and guests alike. Once the mists settle down on the mountain, you can quite clearly understand exactly why some people would feel that Kaapsehoop is indeed the Devil’s place.

Your Day in Kaapsehoop

Winters in Kaapsehoop are best spent sitting close to a fireplace. Kaapsehoop weather in winter is completely unlike the weather in Nelspruit. Icy temperatures seem to permeate clothing, blankets and homes, sinking into the skin. Cosy nights and days spent soaking up the sun are the best ways to get through the winter.

Summers are wonderfully cool, and often, summer is the best time to go hiking in Kaapsehoop. Leaving Mbombela Lodge early in the morning and hiking along the edge of the mountain before returning to the village for a breakfast of pancakes is the stuff memories are made of!

When you are staying in Mbombela at our Mbombela Lodge, make sure that you include a day in Kaapsehoop. You won’t regret the time spent here!
